Create and Enable Peer-to-Peer Fundraisers in Your Donor Portal

Last updated: August 14, 2026

Peer-to-peer (P2P) fundraising lets your supporters raise money on your behalf by creating their own personal fundraising pages tied to one of your campaigns. In Dashboard v2, you set this up in two stages:

  1. Create a P2P template (also called a "P2P preset") that defines the default look, settings, and rules every fundraiser inherits.

  2. Enable P2P in your donor portal so supporters can create and manage their own fundraisers from their profile.

This article walks through both stages in order.

Before you begin

You'll need:

  • A checkout you want fundraiser donations to use.

  • Optionally, a designation (fund) if you want gifts to default to a specific fund.

Stage 1: Create a P2P template

Step 1 — Open P2P Templates and create a new template

  1. Go to P2P Templates in your dashboard.

  2. Click to create a new template. The Create P2P Template dialog appears.

  3. Enter a P2P Template name. This is an internal name to help you identify the template later — supporters don't see it.

  4. Click Create P2P Template.

WeGive creates the template and takes you straight into its settings. A new template generates its own public URL (for example, https://your-org.wegive.com/your-org/p2p-preset/your-template) and is marked Live once saved.

Tip: Give the template a descriptive name like "2026 Walkathon" or "Year-End Giving" so it's easy to find when you have several.

Step 2 — Configure the Overview settings

Inside the template, click the Settings tab, then choose Overview from the left-hand menu. This is where you manage the template's identity.

  • P2P Preset Name (required) — The internal name for this fundraiser preset. You can edit the name you entered when creating the template.

  • Slug — The portion of the URL used for the preset. Edit this to control the public web address of fundraisers created from this template.

  • Fundraiser Name — Decide whether the fundraiser's display name is fixed.

    • Leave Fixed P2P Fundraiser Name unchecked to let each supporter name their own fundraiser, optionally providing a default name they can edit.

    • Check Fixed P2P Fundraiser Name and enter a value to lock every fundraiser to the same name.

Click Save Changes in the left menu whenever you finish a section.

Step 3 — Configure the Setup settings

Choose Setup from the left-hand menu. These settings control the fundraising mechanics.

  • Fundraising Goal — Set whether the goal is fixed and define its default value. Leave Fixed Fundraising Goal unchecked to let supporters set their own target (with the amount you enter as the starting default), or check it to lock the goal for everyone.

  • Checkout — Search for and select the checkout supporters will use for this preset. This determines the giving experience donors see when they give through a fundraiser's page.

  • Allow Donations After End Date — Choose what happens once a fundraiser's end date passes:

    • Fixed "Allow Donations After End Date" Button — Lock the behavior so fundraisers can't change it.

    • Default Allow Donations After End Date — Donations are accepted after the end date by default.

    • Default Disallow Donations After End Date — Donations stop after the end date by default.

  • Designation — Set whether the designation (the fund a gift is applied to) is fixed, and search to choose a default designation. Check Fixed Designation to lock all gifts to a single fund.

Step 4 — Configure the Appearance settings

Choose Appearance from the left-hand menu. These settings control how fundraiser pages look and which elements display. Each visibility option offers a "Fixed" checkbox plus a default of Show or Hide.

  • Leaderboard Visibility — Show or hide the leaderboard on fundraiser pages. Check Fixed Leaderboard Visibility to lock the choice.

  • Activity Visibility — Show or hide the activity feed. Check Fixed Activity Visibility to lock it.

  • Fundraise Button — Show or hide the fundraise button. Check Fixed Fundraise Button to lock it.

  • Background Photo — Set whether the background photo is fixed and upload a default image (click to upload or drag and drop; JPG supported). Check Fixed Background Photo to use the same image on every page.

  • Description — Set whether the description is fixed and define its default content using the rich-text editor. Check Fixed Description to lock the description for all fundraisers.

Step 5 — Configure the Dates settings

Choose Dates from the left-hand menu.

  • Start Date — Set whether the start date is fixed and define its default value. Check Fixed Start Date to lock it, then select a date.

  • End Date — Set whether the end date is fixed and define its default value. Check Fixed End Date to lock it, then select a date.

When you've finished all sections, make sure you've clicked Save Changes. Your template is now ready to use.

A note on Implement and Archive: From the template header you can click Implement to get the code/embed options for placing the fundraiser experience on your own site, or Archive to retire a template you no longer use.

Stage 2: Enable P2P fundraising in your donor portal

Creating a template isn't enough on its own — you also need to turn on P2P in your donor portal so supporters can create and manage fundraisers. This happens in Portal Settings and has two parts: adding P2P Create to your navigation, and enabling the fundraiser widget on donor profiles.

Step 6 — Add "P2P Create" to your portal navigation

  1. Go to Portal Settings.

  2. Open the Navigation tab.

  3. Find the P2P Create section.

  4. Choose where the option appears using the checkboxes:

    • Include in menu — Adds P2P Create to the portal menu.

    • Include in header — Adds P2P Create to the portal header.

  5. Set the defaults this navigation entry uses:

    • Fundraiser Preset — Select the P2P template (preset) you created in Stage 1. This is the template new fundraisers will be built from.

    • Campaign — Select the campaign that fundraisers created here will raise money toward.

This is what gives your supporters a visible way to start a fundraiser from the portal.

Step 7 — Enable the P2P fundraiser widget on donor profiles

  1. Still in Portal Settings, open the Advanced Settings tab.

  2. Choose P2P Fundraising from the left-hand menu.

  3. Under P2P Fundraising, select:

    • Yes, show the P2P Fundraiser widget on all profiles and allow users to manage their fundraiser from their profile. — This turns the feature on. Supporters will see the widget on their donor profile and can create and manage their fundraiser there.

    • No, hide the P2P Fundraiser widget on all profiles. — This keeps the widget off.

  4. Save your settings.

Once both Navigation and Advanced Settings are configured, P2P fundraising is live in your portal.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a "fixed" setting and a default?
A default is the starting value a fundraiser sees and can change. A fixed setting (the "Fixed…" checkbox) locks the value so supporters can't edit it. Use fixed settings to enforce consistency — for example, locking the designation so every gift goes to the same fund.

Do supporters see the template name?
No. The P2P Preset Name is internal. Supporters see the fundraiser name, which is controlled by the Fundraiser Name setting on the Overview tab.

Can I have more than one template?
Yes. Create a separate template for each program or season, then point the appropriate Navigation entry at the preset you want.

Why don't supporters see the option to create a fundraiser?
Confirm both portal steps are done: P2P Create is included in the menu and/or header (with a Fundraiser Preset and Campaign selected) under Navigation, and the P2P Fundraiser widget is set to Yes under Advanced Settings → P2P Fundraising.

What happens after a fundraiser's end date?
That depends on the Allow Donations After End Date option on the Setup tab — donations either continue or stop, based on the default (or fixed) choice you set.
